Making Deadlines

Written by Andrew on March 30th, 2008

Any company, be it big, small, profit, or non, has to deal with deadlines. Some companies deal with their own internal project deadlines, others with those set forth by their clients. Deadlines drive many industries and the web industry is no different.

However, different companies deal with deadlines in different ways. Take for example those related to the members of Tridea:

John works during the day as a member of a large creative agency. Dealing with clients that have very large project budgets, deadlines can be very strict. There have been a few occasions when John has worked extra hours to polish off his work to make a deadline.

That’s a scenario that many businesses face…burning the midnight oil.

Yet, at my company, a medium/large non-profit, we’re our own client. So we set and meet our own deadlines. We’ve been working on a site-wide redesign that has also had various side projects dealing with infrastructure, data centers, and other technological aspects aside from the public facing site. Recently, we’ve had to push our self imposed deadline, twice, because of various difficult factors that we were working hard to resolve. Because we’re working for ourselves and not on someone elses budget, we’ve been able to accept some flexibility on the deadline, but that’s a luxury (albeit an uncomfortable one) that not all companies have.

At Tridea, we don’t work on projects that are multi-million dollars…yet. We don’t have to deal with difficult infrastructure and internal capital configuration issues…yet. The great thing about serving the clients we serve, is that when we set deadlines at Tridea, we always make them. We work efficiently, effectively, and to date have been accurate enough in our assessment of project scope that we’ve met every deadline we and the client set.

Now, you never know what the future holds…project size, company growth, increased demand…but from where we sit now, we feel great about our ability to work with great clients and meet our deadlines every time.

In addition to what you mentioned, deadlines can give you motivation, and something to work towards. It’s a time frame for solving a problem, and when you don’t have deadlines, projects can get drawn out, scope creep happens, and so on. So it’s motivating.
