The Point of Social Media

Written by John Phillips on March 13th, 2008

Everyone loves social networking and spending time communicating on the web with their friends. What’s even more interesting is that we are starting to see many more companies getting involved. Marketers are aiming towards this quite a bit in effort to extend their brand further.

The point, however, for using social media is to hear more from the people that grow your business. Social media should not be a one way (business-to-consumer) street. It is setup so that your business can interact and communicate with with those that keep your business alive. There have been way too many companies getting on the bandwagon of social media just because it’s the latest trend and another branding opportunity.

That is the wrong reason to get into social media. If you do choose social media, use it to engage with people, not talk to people. You can’t get any better research than actually hearing from your customers. They will be honest with you and tell you how your business is doing, what is good, what is bad, etc. If you aren’t engaged with your audience through social media, then you might have wasted a lot of money getting into social media in the first place.
