The Beauty of Working Remotely

Written by Andrew on August 5th, 2007

One of the great things about living in the Internet Age and working in the field of web design is that we’re no longer chained to our desks! The beauty of our work is that wherever you have laptop and internet signal, you can work.

This past week, I was fortunate enough to work from my company’s office in New York. It was quite a different change of pace. The biggest difference? Not using a car. Granted I try and use public transportation in my city, but that’s the bus and it plops me less than a block from my workplace. In NY, each morning, I walked 5 minutes to get to the subway, then rode for about 30-40 minutes, then walked another 5. Still, it was invigorating.

And it’s great that my job afforded me the flexibility to work from the NY office, some aren’t that lucky. Of course, with Tridea, we’re a decentralized team that works out of a few locations. I’ve conducted Tridea business from a wifi enabled burger joint! For many web/tech/design workers, a fixed office place is not required. Grab your mac book pro, VPN in, fire up Google Docs, boot up Parallels, open Outlook, log onto Basecamp, even start a Skype video chat; it’s all golden for a road warrior.

So if you’re reading this and you have that kind of flexibility, take advantage of it! Go work outside, in a park, at a local coffee shop. You might even find that changing your scenery inspires new and creative designs!

[...] I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I do love the mobility of working with a laptop. Hmmm….where’s the coolest location you’ve done remote work? For us pixel-pushers, we usually like to be connected to the net so there’s that constraint. I envy cities with free wifi coverage…that makes relocating your dark office to the nearest park quite attractive. I think the coolest remote working experience I’ve had was on the 3rd floor of the MSU library next to a window as a massive thunderstorm went by. Rain and thunder really help put me in a coding groove. But I digress. [...]
